Living on one of the most prestigious roads in North London our client wanted a complete refurbishment to create a beautiful family home for years to come. This included an extension and new open plan layout making use of plenty of internal glazing to break up the space but retaining natural light and views. Work covered the whole house including external features like re-rendering and all windows and finishes being installed to a fantastic standard.

# Brief
Having lived around the corner from this property for several years our client and their family knew they wanted to settle in this location. When a rather traditional house came up for sale in this fantastic park side road they knew they had to grab it despite the amount of work that would be required. The overall layout needed reviewing with some redundant spaces being combined to form a better balance of bedrooms as well as the garage and utility being relocated so that the kitchen could be expanded. Our client also wanted a better relationship with the beautiful garden, with thought given to the best glazing solution.

# Concept 
This extension creates a generous volume for living and playing, essential for a growing family! Coordinating with the engineers to celebrate the structure by leaving it exposed inside was an absolute joy as the result is quite eye-catching. The spaces these exposed steel beams helped us create maximise the floor area and encourage a connection with the outdoors. We gained access to the back garden and provided sensible elements like a boot room and more generous WC to facilitate movement between inside and outside. 

On the first floor we created balance in the floor plan of the four bedroom layout - by combing spaces to create good sized ensuite bathrooms, walk in closets and a more centralised family bathroom. Our team playfulness and creative flare has been captured in this design perfectly through a hidden door! Secret access to the study is through a bookcase in the dining room, this feature is adored by our clients (possibly loved by the adults even more than the kids).

# Challenges
We really wanted to keep the existing charming rafters in the roof for this project. Therefore we had to work closely with the Structural Engineer to ensure there was a balance between old and new structure. The result was we spliced in a tie beam into the roof structure to support the new loads. This meant we could retain the existing rafters and preserve some of the building's character.

Palmer's Green

Our client had an incredible plot, with their modest bungalow enjoying stunning forest views. A complete refurbishment with a new loft conversion and a substantial extension turn this house into an absolute stunner.
Given the nearby conservation area, the sloping site and large trees there were some challenges to the design but we were able to exceed our clients expectations. The new kitchen and living space is very special with double height ceiling flooded with natural light to create a crisp and modern upgrade to this home.

# Brief
The aim was to create crisp, modern additions to this home while integrating some important upgrades to the house as a whole. This included the external finishes and windows along with the rear elevation that benefited from some elegantly framed sliding glass doors. This has helped to really connect the new space with the garden.

The existing property featured a modest sized bungalow, with a large garden surrounding the property. This was a key element to ensure we could expand the existing property to meet the client's needs. 

# Concept
Our design team reconfigured the property and added well designed extensions that have really helped to make the best of the living space this family required. There was huge potential with this property and by flooding the space with natural light we have created a bright and airy home.

We have been able to create a somewhat hybrid design, making small adjustments to the the existing and then pushing our design further with the use of new materials and technologies that compliment the existing property.

Beginning our design process with 3D sketches means we can look at the project as a whole, allowing volumes to interact and create architecturally striking elements that may otherwise be overlooked with a more traditional two-dimensional design.

# Challenges
Due to the nearby conservation area, the sloping site and large trees these issues did pose some potential problems to gaining planning approval. However, due to many years of experience and good working relationships with planners these issues were swiftly overcome and construction is now complete.

This client wanted a space to display their book and art collection. Superb attention to detail was required to avoid distracting from these beautiful pieces. Simple dark neutral tones of wood and stone and directional lighting set the mood perfectly in the space.

Refurbishment of antiquities gallery in Mayfair

This Edwardian home needed a major update and the new owner wanted a modern finish that allowed the spaces to function much better. A three storey side extension and rear single storey extension with a new gable were all added to maximise this plot. Well chosen finishes and clean simple lines created a beautiful contemporary family home. With a generous open plan space at the rear as well as a full width glass opening into the garden there was much structural work to navigate to facilitate a solution that really worked well.

# Brief
The age of the building meant a lot of services and utilities needed to be completely replaced. This project needed to go back to its bare bones and be rebuilt carefully. Spaces that were key were the open plan family living space, a large functional utility with separate access and of course a show stopping top floor master bedroom that would make the most of the views over the London landscape.

# Concept
Being partially rendered already the proposal sought to modernise and bring a much sharper fresh look to the rear whilst allowing the front of the property to retain its charm on its street setting. Being given a little more free rein on the back elevation we were able to play with modern finishes and forms.

The simple ground floor extension and loft conversion, were bold flat roof contemporary additions accented by zinc details which cleverly concealed rain water goods. The glass openings were also treated as huge clear view opportunities. The ground floor full width sliding glass doors made good use of the latest glazing technology with minimal interruption from frames. And being perched on a hill, the top floor master bedroom was designed to drink in the views over the city with a glass balustrade Juliet balcony.

# Challenges
Due to the proximity of the neighbour one of the planning issues faced was how wide we could extend within planning policies without jeopardising the internal layout. The original garage footprint was up against the boundary which we were able to mimic with the new proposal. However, the neighbour's first floor window meant we needed to step in at the first floor. This was to take into account rights to light policies and we had much back and forth with the planners to make sure that we were able to achieve the maximum potential without encroachment on this. With the splayed nature of the side boundary we were still able to create a great additional bedroom space.

Structurally the house also needed a great deal of remedial work and new beams to provide that fantastic open plan kitchen. Huge full width spans of steelwork were carefully coordinated with finishes and detailing so that the result was seamless with these elements recessed and hidden from view for the best result.

### Project
This beautiful North London period home required extending along with  structural changes to accommodate a better layout and a total internal refurbishment. 

### Brief
The original features were restored whilst enhancing the property for a better family setup. A new master bedroom was formed with ensuite and walk through closet. The kitchen was reoriented and opened out for a fantastic open plan living space. High quality materials and features were installed throughout.

Victorian Upgrade

Method Studio have had a working relationship with JPD for over 10 years delivering many high end projects of varying scales.
